Harajuku Fashion

'Harajuku girls', popularly known as the 'fashion aficionados' or the 'beauty stars of Japan', are best known all over the world for their unique costumes, which are made in various styles of clothing that originated in the rich culture of some of the major cities of Japan. They have been named after the very popular Harajuku district in Tokyo and were made popular in the West by the 'Love.Angel.Music.Baby' album released in 2004 by Gwen Stefani.

Their Clothing Styles

These young, beautiful fashion icons are Japanese teenage girls who gather in a narrow street of 'Takeshita' every weekend and dress themselves up as the baby dolls of the Lolita-esque caricatures. A large number of fashion styles, including the cyber fashion, Gothic Maid, Wamono, Gothic Lolita, Second-Hand Fashion, and Decorah, can be noticed among these young ladies.

They can be often seen wearing dark outfits combined with traditional Japanese clothing, such as Kimonos and fans. Some of them also wear fake bandages and blood and carry things, such as cell phones, hello kitties, and photo stickers, which symbolize modern Japan. The varied clothing styles of these girls are beautifully featured by 'FRUiTS', the most popular Japanese street-fashion magazine.

Japanese Baby Clothes

Simple Japanese style clothing for babies and children are not only cute, they are also kind to babies and are a great way to avoid tears and possible skin irritation.

Traditional Japanese style baby clothes are based on the kimono 'wrap' style. This prevents the parents from having to pull anything over the baby's head, which is a traumatic experience for babies - especially newborns up to about three months. New parents will tell you (including me!) of the difficulty they have supporting the baby's neck and then trying to pull a baby vest over the head. It's tough and it can be a tearful time for small babies which can become a stressful experience for new parents.

The wrap style used with Japanese baby clothes allow you to place the baby on top of the garment and simply wrap the baby up, therefore, eliminating the need to pull anything over the head. This simple way of dressing baby is an effective way of preventing tears as it allows you to keep eye contact with your baby throughout. I for one noticed a big difference at changing time.

Japanese history includes alternating periods of isolation and revolutionary influences from the rest of the world. As early as the Jomon period from about 14000BC to 300 BC, Japan had a hunter-gatherer lifestyle; wooden stilt houses, pit dwelling, and agriculture. Weaving was still unknown and the ancient Japanese clothing consisted of fur. However, some of the world's oldest pottery is found in Japan, along with daggers, jade, combs made form shell and clay figures.

The period thereafter to 250 BC saw the influx of new practices like weaving, rice sowing, iron and bronze making influenced by china and Korea. Chinese travelers describe the men 'with braided hair, tattooing and women with large, single-piece clothing.' Initially ancient Japanese clothing consisted of single piece clothing. The ancient and classical Japan begins from the middle of the 3rd century to 710. An advanced agricultural and militaristic culture defines this period. By 645, Japan rapidly adopted Chinese practices and reorganized its penal code.
